Bigger Charleston Developments to Watch

Beyond new restaurants and retail, several long-term projects could bring much larger changes to Charleston.

Cooper River Courts + Meeting Street Manor Redevelopment

A major redevelopment project could eventually bring more than 1,500 mixed-income homes to Charleston.

The Charleston Housing Authority and Atlanta-based developer Integral have reached an agreement to move forward with the redevelopment of Cooper River Courts and Meeting Street Manor.

Together, the projects could eventually include approximately 1,545 mixed-income homes.

Why It Matters

A housing project of this size could have a much broader impact than an individual restaurant or retail opening.

The redevelopment comes as Charleston continues to navigate population growth, housing demand, affordability, and development on the peninsula.

What’s planned: Approximately 1,545 mixed-income homes across the two redevelopment projects

Lowcountry Lowline | Downtown Charleston

One of Charleston’s most anticipated long-term public-space projects is also moving forward.

The Lowcountry Lowline is planned along a former railroad corridor on the Charleston peninsula. The project would transform the space into a linear park connecting surrounding neighborhoods.

Plans include pedestrian and bicycle paths, green space, neighborhood connections, and stormwater-management features.

What Is Phase I?

The City of Charleston has committed funding to Phase I. It includes portions of the corridor north of Line Street, Lowline Park, and connections to surrounding neighborhoods.

As the project develops, it could create new pedestrian and bicycle connections while adding public green space to the peninsula.
